When you live in Gangnam, it’s hard to ever venture out of the neighborhoods located South of the river. It’s organized, it’s familiar, and it’s close to home. But I think sometimes you have those days where you feel the need to venture out of your comfort zone.
So last week, the man and I went for date night at the Beastro, a little American bistro located in the Hongdae area up north. We’ve heard good things about it from our friends who live close to it, and finally made the trek over.
The man got there first, so I was a bit late, but thankfully found the bistro tucked into a little alleyway.
When you enter, the first thing you see is the hostess table and a waiting area with an opening into the kitchen. We didn’t have a wait, but it was still inspiring to see the chefs at work. I was escorted upstairs to the terrace, where the man had gotten us a seat by the window.
Lighting was perfect, and we proceeded to order. We got the Buffalo Mac & Cheese as a side to share (13,000won) and for our entrees chose their famous 24 Hour Hanger Steak with onion mustard gravy (27,000won for 300g) as well as a pastry dish that is apparently no longer on their menu. It was very reminiscent of a cornish pasty with flaky bits of fish in the middle. It came with a fresh tossed herb salad that cut the richness of the pastry really well.
I’m pretty sure we were stuffed silly with this much food for two people, but not to worry – we finished every bite and had no regrets afterwards (spoiler alert: we had ice cream after).
Service was extremely quick and the servers were extremely polite and friendly. If we ever make our way up north again (cross your fingers), we’ll be visiting again soon.
